This is an optional convention we're offered this year. Anyone have any feedback? Ade will be teaching this year!

My only experience w/ them was a couple of years ago. They were suppose to come here and then backed out at the last minute and we had to threaten legal action to get our money back. Other then that I don't know.

One of my most favorite conventions. Kacy Combs is the director and he is awesome.

We have been every year that it's been to Florida and we always enjoy it. It's small enough that you don't feel like one in a million but large enough to give the feel of the big conventions. The scholarships are great and the faculty is amazing.

This year we are really excited about Ade and Tokyo! Tokyo came to our studio recently and he is amazing!

xoxo,
Jackie

We will be doing Wild this year as our one convention. Last year was Kaitlin's first convention and she did Shock. Our 2 local choices this year were Shock and Wild and we decided to try Wild and see how she likes it.

How old do you have to be to attend a convention? Do you have to go under the direction of a SO or DT, or can you go on your own or as a group. A couple of moms want to get together and take our little ones, ages 5and 6.....

kyonna,
I really think 5 is too young. There are lots of kids there, she will probably be in with kids aged up to 7 or 8 (huge difference in ability and maturity in that age range) and I think it'd be just way too overwhelming.
Stop rushing things - she is soooooo young. You will look back when she's 10 and think "what was I thinking with pushing the comp and convention thing so early"?

Just wait and let her get used to being on comp this year. Slow it down or else if she is pushed, she will either just burn out or could end up hating it all by the time she's 10.

Kyonna I think they have a division for little ones 5-7 that is only like 3 hours. I bet she would enjoy it and since it isn't as long I would give it a shot. I wouldn't recommend Shock for that age though, the mini room says 8 and under but last year there were several kids that were obviously over 8.

Thanks for the encouragement "Kaitibugsmom". I do remember hearing about the mini's age group for conventions but I was not sure.

To "Ozmom", I in no way feel like I am pushing dd into too much too soon. I have always been a person who likes variety and likes to take opportunities. The whole convention thing was merely an idea some other moms and I thought of and I was just looking for info. I have never committed to the idea of taking her so please don't make more out of things than what it is.
Honestly dd is carrying a light load compared to some other dancers her age and younger I know. There are a few 4 yr olds on her comp team (which means you have 4 yr olds carrying a 6 hr a week load). At a neighboring studio where I also have friends, there dd's who are the same age are taking 8-9 hrs a week and will be competing in 4 separate dances in comp this year.
I know my dd is right where she needs to be. She is truly enjoying herself and has made a lot of new friends. I have had no more problems with her not wanting to go to class. Her technique and more importantly her confidence has grown so much in so little time. She is a happy and well adjusted 5 yr old who enjoys what she is doing and I have no regrets for any of it.......

kyonna, look on the Wild website and check the ages for the different rooms in the convention. I know that at JUMP last year they had JUMPstarts for the 6 & under kids and since it was a required convention our studio had some kids in that room.

We'll be going again this year, and we have more little bittys so I don't think it would be too much for your DD.

I kinda like your gung ho attitude. When my DD was a mini mini we had parents who didn't have a clue what it meant to be on a comp team. You seem to be doing your homework so good for you!

This is the first year we have Minis at our studio (officially) and conventions aren't required this year, but are recommended. We took 2 7-yo Minis to Shock! last week, and they *loved* it! The room was 5-10 year olds, but everyone seemed to be working hard and having a lot of fun. There were definately younger girls in the room - a bunch that looked 5-6 - and they were having a ball. It was 5 classes over 4.25 hours - the Juniors and up had 8 classes ending around 4-5pm. It was a great experience for the girls, who got to experience new instructors in a different class setting (they didn't seem to have any problems being in a room with ~100 girls), and my daughter finally got her pirouette which she needs for her solo, so it was well worth it!

Our minis are 6-8, but will be in the Mini Starz! room at West Coast Dance Explosion in January. It sounds like 5-6 of the girls will be there, which is about 1/2 the team. Some of them are old enough for the Junior room, but our SO says it's tough, and I think the girls would rather stick together anyway. They're young - they've got plenty of time to move up and get serious. This year is about figuring things out and having fun - for her and for me! (I'm so glad I found this site!)
