HI. I have been here reading all week and appreciate reading all the many sides of this issue. Not only did I find many great answers to my question, but an interesting discussion on the matter. I have been thinking about what I wanted to add to the discusion.
In my community we have so many activities for girls with competitive or we call it "travel" or premier leagues (dance, gymanstics, soccer, vollyball, softball etc.) available, particularly starting around the age of 9 or 10. I can see that girls who are involved in more than one of these competitive options have most of the conflicts as these activities tend to come with expectations of attendance and your undivided attention. I can see the point that it is hard for kids to have to decide at such a young age which activity they going to make their "primary". We had an easier time as my DD never excelled at traditional sports (she always looked like a dancer on the soccer field). We were able to make dance her primary, though well balnecing her with some other activites (though they all seem to be art related) that could come second.
Traditionally our comp. team consists of children like my daughter. There are plenty of amazing dancers in our non-comp groups which my daughter takes as well, they happen to be children that had to make dance their secondary as they played travel sports or another such activity. Also, there are dancers in our comp. program trying to balance more than one comp. activity as they have a love for more than one activity. Our SO has tried to accomidate if all of this is explained and schedules are known before the beginning of the season. This situation which I spoke initially, was a change mid season change and I think too hard for the SO to accomidate.
Your feedback is helpful as I understand all sides of the issue and of course leave it to my SO to work out and use the experience as a growing opportunity for my DD
I apprecaite all the feedback and love the wise words of the dance moms from this board!!! |
