Has anyone been to
NRG Dance Project in the past year or so? This one is new to our area and we are competing in hip hop. Our studio is also attending the convention. Looking at the sample schedule, when is the competition? After the convention on Saturday, i.e. starting at 3pm?

I have a similar question. My studio is doing the convention and competition with dancers competing on Friday and Saturday. I wonder if that means we only do the Sunday portion of the Convention? What if our dance is scheduled early can we then join the convention classes? I have never done the convention/competition thing.

Typically at most conventions I've seen, the competition runs in the late afternoon/evening after the convention concludes for the days. I have seen some with optional Friday night workshops that run concurrently with the competition.

When there is a convention+competition (like in the case of NRG), what usually happens is the normal classes are all day saturday and sunday (ending at ~3:00 sat and ~5:00 sun, incl the gala/closing show). There are often extra/optional classes, which take place on Friday evening DURING competition. If you are competing Friday and Sat, the only classes you will miss are the optional Friday ones, comp is after convention Saturday and all day Friday. It does make for some late nights, though- our awards at NYCDA this weekend will end after midnight Saturday.

Everyone will go to classes on Saturday, then the group competitions are Saturday afternoon into the evening, and then everyone goes to the Sunday classes. There's also auditions for scholarships on Sunday during the classes. One thing about NRG is that they only have 1 awards for everything, so if you have solos or duos on Friday night, you have to wait until all of the group dances are done on Saturday to find out your adjudication and overalls. They also don't do trophy's, they send "discs" flying at you for your award while the emcees make airplane and rockets sounds. LOL! It's a fun convention and one of my daughter's favorites. She really enjoys the tap and hip hop classes at NRG. Have fun!
