Watching from the audience side, sometimes in a booth if such a thing exists at the theater.

In smaller organizations, such as a youth company, a director might need to wear other hats and might be backstage functioning as a stage manager or who knows what!

Last year when my daughter was a mini, she was in the wings.  This year, she is in the audience.

I assumed she was talking about a full length performance, such as a Nutcracker or Sleeping Beauty.

Our director was always in the audience, generally in the back.   The assistant director was back stage making sure props and dancers were making their cues.

Our local ballet company's director is always in the sound booth at the back of theater and the assistant director is backstage helping with quick changes.

Three studios. . . The two women were in the audience, perhaps running sound or lights.  The male director always ended up dancing in the show because there are never enough male dancers.

In the AV booth in the back of the audience (sometimes above the audience). There are plenty of others to help back stage.

This was my experience as well.  Male directors tend to perform, but female directors watch/take notes from the house somewhere.

Up in the booth at the back, but communicating with the stage manager who is back stage.
