Now that we have survived graduation it was fun to have lunch with DD and discuss some of the conversations she and her classmates had the last few weeks. Some tears, some funny talks, etc. But a few stuck in my mind that younger dance parents might enjoy.
The first: she was asked to explain to some of her classmates what you actually do for a dance major and after saying that about 1/2 of classes will be academic but about 1/2 will be dance then the jock boys in class had a whole new respect for her because she has figured how to do her "sport" as her major The second: she got a graduation present that was a Hershey bar with a note wrapped around it from a small child whose name couldn't be clearly read so she asked at the studio and was told that it was from a little guy who has a crush on her which was adorable but in the course of the conversation she was reminded by other dance students that she has been an incredible role model for so many young people that they made her cry The last: the kids in band with her literally took a pool to bet how often she will get to come home since very few kids around here go across the country for college and some of them made sure to let her know that they really admire how gutsy and independent she is (extra bonus from years of intensives) So yes others at school and at the studio are watching the older dancers and really do see the benefits of years of crazy dedication.
