It is a real worry though, so many dance teachers are encouraging the extreme flexibility and putting the extreme flexibility moves into the dance routines. So either the teachers are unaware of the damage they are doing to kids bodies, which is a worry. Or they don't care about it, which is even more of a worry.

They say that but the judges reward routines that are filled with gymnastics.  Until they get back to rewarding clean and solid dance, there will be more and more of these gymnastic and circus tricks.

Just forwarded it to DD although luckily she has been taught by her various teachers not to overstretch. She is not in a competition school though.  There is a famous conservatory here where they are known to overstretch and push 5th position.  The hard part is that these dancers seem to often be rewarded for it with SI acceptances, competition wins etc according to DD even if their technique isn't as strong as their over-flexibility.  There are those few dancers who are naturally limber too who have to work hard with their core strength to be stable.  DD is not overly flexible and so far she has resisted it though and keeps her stretching in the safe zone from what I see.

A very well-written article I must say. Stretching is an important element in dance for improvisation. It benefits with flexibility and improves self-discipline as well.
