Yes, google is my friend, but I was wondering if anyone was aware of some single site that had an exhaustive list of companies.  I actually find BTFD to be lacking these days.  So much missing.  And so much of what is there (as it relates to companies) isn't very active... in some cases hasn't been active in years.  Thoughts?

We never found one. There are so many small companies out there that do not show up on various existing lists and, as you mentioned, not much on BTFD once you are looking beyond the better known SIs.

I even registered for that Ballet Auditions website this past year, hoping to get the scoop on company auditions to assist in planning.  That was a waste. They have a list of "companies" but it is not just ballet companies or even just dance companies. There are so many schools and student companies in their directory that it is not worth looking at. They were also slow to post company auditions. We generally had found them on our own by the time they posted anything. I was hoping to be able to search by city like I did for SIs the one year I used the site, but there just wasn't enough information input to make that valuable.

For dd this past year, dh and she did a lot of Google searches plus used sites like Guidestar to get an idea of financial stability.

I noticed that too... when I googled, the lists generated included schools and student dance companies.  So crazy that such a list can not be found.  And BTFD... given that they exist to help ballet dancers, why "don't" they have such a list?  How can that not seem like a good idea?   lol

Might be worth asking on BTFD. Maybe someone will have a suggestion for a more up to date resource.

Also look at Ballet Alert, the sister site for people who like ballet (audience members). Probably also not up to date but might help you find more companies. Probably 1/2 of the companies that invited dd for company class this year were companies I had never heard of!

Good to know.  We're starting that whole process... just the research I mean.  Thanx for the suggestion.

I don't think there is a comprehensive list. I looked about 3 years ago, when my eldest was seriously considering career options, and we were trying to figure out SIs that could lead to trainees or second company positions, and did not find a comprehensive list.

This is just a list of AGMA companies:
https://www.musicalartists.org/about-agma/signatories/

I know that a while back, BTFD had a list of companies that had a 28 week or longer contract. Maybe search there for "28 week" under the career discussion section...?

Dance USA has several hundred listed and seems pretty comprehensive to me.

http://dance-usa.s3.amazonaws.com/page_uploads/Roster15.pdf

I used this one and then highlighted companies at different budget levels (e.g. companies with budgets over 20Mil, over 10mil, over 5 Mil).  It helps to see the fiscal side. It's all a business.

These are not all AGMAs though but the top ones are.

Not sure how modern/contemporary you're looking to get.  Nimbus Dance Works, Garth Fagan Dance, Phildanco, Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham ...

That DanceUSA list is definitely the most comprehensive list I've seen!

Even the list Joriebelle shared has some companies that I recognize as student companies on it.

Lots of research to do. Glad I am now past that stage. [smile] Actually, dh and dd did it all. I just sat on the sidelines and didn't start looking at companies until she had a company class invite, SI acceptance (and boy were there tons of those!) or some other positive indicator.

Tendumom-

Off topic -
Was she seeing a lot of SI offers with possibilities second companies, but holding out for a paid position? I'm wondering if that's as common as it was in years past - the "come to our SI, and maybe we will let your join our big name second company, but maybe not" thing.....

More of a hijack..

Yes! "A lot of SI offers" is an understatement! She ended up with something like 12 SI invitations, every last one from company auditions. Some of those were consideration for actual paid positions, some for unpaid positions and some for tuition based programs. Some came with decent scholarships, some with token scholarships and some without any scholarship, including one that for consideration for a paid position (so, we pay them and then they pay over the course of the season, possibly even less than we paid). There was a period of time where it seemed she walked away with an SI invitation from every audition. [biggrin] Not true though, she was cut sometimes too... and as an FYI, not everyone at each of these auditions was offered an SI invite. Definitely at certain programs (and not the bigger name programs) but not at all by any means. There was one audition that sent SI invites to even those who were cut.

She was looking for the next step and was hoping for at least a second company or an unpaid position in general. She became very frustrated with the SI invitation thing after an experience with one company. She had made it to the very end of this company's audition in NYC and was one of a very small number asked to stay afterwards. At that point, she had already made a commitment to a short SI session that overlapped with this company's SI, so she spoke them about that. At the audition she was told that once she got her email to just contact them and it would be a non-issue. She got the email, contacted them by phone and by email with no response at all.

She did hold out for what she really wanted in the end. She turned down probably 11 SIs, several outright traineeship type positions (tuition based, with or without scholarship), a few unpaid positions and 2 positions that came with a tiny stipend. Though she did not turn down one unpaid position that we encouraged her to hold on to until this position came through. We think that position ended up going to one of her friends actually, based on the timing. [smile]

I should write a summary at some point for those who are interested.

That's a great list Joriebelle, thank you.  There are companies I'm aware of that are missing but it's certainly pretty extensive.  More than just a start.

eta:  and thank you for that link as well, classydance.  That is 'quite' a list.

We're just interested in ballet but I'm sure others would be interested in a list of modern/contemporary companies.

It's definitely going to take a lot of time which is why we're starting the process now... to minimize the pressure down the line.  We're thinking of approaching this upcoming year much like you see those looking towards college approaching that process in their junior year.  Online research.  Even auditions...  if only to get a sense of what to expect when she goes out for real the year after.  I'm sure her new coaches will offer her a lot of direction in that department... thankfully.  Can never be too prepared[smile]

Yes!  I am interested!

Is the position she took a paid position?  Do dancers typically have a 2nd job also or is all of their time spent with the company?

It's a full time position, entry level, so to speak. Provided with shoes, tights and other dance necessities and some money, but no where enough to live on. It is enough that she would qualify for worker's comp if injured as a result of dance.  Not privy to what she would make at the highest rank (company only has three ranks).

I'll  collect my thoughts on all of this and start another thread soon. There's much to still digest.. a very busy audition season, the agonizing wait, the arguments over whether accepting certain positions is settling and whether she should settle or not because there was no way to know if something better was going to come along, and so much more.

In case anyone else is following this for their own research.. American National Ballet in South Carolina and Indianapolis Ballet are new for the 17-18 season.  Plus I didn't see Ajkun Ballet Theatre mentioned on those lists.. they are in nyc.  And I also don't think I saw Connecticut Ballet.

Also not on the list is Manassass Ballet in Northern Virginia. And I believe this season was the final season for Suzanne Farrell's company at the Kennedy Center in DC.
